Echoes is a Fae/fantasy Roleplay forum that opened in early February 2024. We are an AU community loosely based on the book series 'A Court of Thorns and Roses' by Sarah J Maas. Our story takes place generally around the time of the first book, before any kind of war with Hybern. However we do not strictly follow the plot or timeline of any of the books directly but only use them as loose inspiration to generate our play. It generally follows a fantasy tone when it comes to buildings and clothing with modern-ish touches like indoor plumbing, heating and lighting that runs on magic.

Our major site wide plot now vibes with just after the first book where the evil Queen has been slain and Prythian is free of her cruelty. We take our own AU Adventure here by bringing back the eighth court - the Dusk court but they're not what you expect!

Priestesshood

  • General Info

The Mother is one of the divine entities of the faeries. She was the one that spilled the Cauldron's content creating Prythian and all the known world. It is said she has a dark counterpart called the Dark Mother. The Cauldron is a powerful magical artifact that is said to have been used to create life. A magical Cauldron with the cosmic matter from which the world where Prythian originated from. It is to these two great 'deities' that the Priestesshood devote themselves to.

In the world of Prythian, there are those who dedicate themselves to serving the Mother, the Cauldron and the link between them and the Faerie populations. They oversee religious ceremonies and rituals of all kinds, record histories and legends and are generally considered to be women of great political power that often serve as advisors or confidants of their Lords and Ladies and are usually able to hold the attention of High Lords. They do not serve one court but all courts of Prythian in the name of the Mother and the Cauldron. The Priestesshood is said to reign from their altars. Their magic largely coming from the practice of their ceremonies and rituals. The Priesthood has also become a bit of a sanctuary, not just for females looking to be educated but also by man that have suffered some sort of trauma.

All Priestesses are allowed to dally sexually as its considered blasphemous to the Cauldrons gift of sensuality to lock up those base, carnal instincts. Yet the do not tend to marry or 'love' for themselves and bearing children requires permission since children are considered extremely sacred. They do not bear them without the full blessing of the twelve High Priestesses and the intention of one day becoming a High Priest themselves. The children of ordained High Priestesses are typically seen as powerful or 'Cauldron blessed' and are often well-respectedd as any Lords children would be. Using sex and seduction as a finely crafted weapon to gain favour and trust in a High Lords inner circle or among his top ranks who have sufficient power.

A Fledgling and Priestess can depart from the Priestesshood at any time, for any reason without being shunned for it. They may choose to leave to marry or simply because they believe their journey as a Priestess has come to an end. A High Priestess cannot leave the priestesshood until she either dies or relieves her position to an apprenticing Priestess placed under her wing. She is not to bear children for herself but for the great of the realm. Leaving what offspring she births to be reared completely by their sires after birth. A High Priestesses loyalty is meant only for the Mother & the Cauldron.

However, over recent decades with the ascension of Mishanti, there have been some Priestesses and High Priestesses that have become 'corrupt' with the ideals of ambition and power. Letting the high seat of community importance that they sit upon go to their head. Doing as they pleased, using whoever they would and never really being held toward any accountability for their actions. Because of these few, the rot of these Priestesses has corrupted the overall image of the Priestesshood in general. Souring their once sacred place in the eyes of the Fae folk communities. This does not mean that all Priestesses/High Priestesses are corrupt nor does it mean that everyone has grown skeptical. It merely means that the Priestesshoods reputation has become blemished in some Faes eyes. To most though, the 'power' beneath the blue cloak and invoking stone remains and whether they approve of the Priestesshood or not, most still recognize it for the powerhouse it still maintains throughout all the courts and few dare to actually mess with it.

    Invoking Stones

When writing your Priestess or High Priestess, one of their 'unique powers' should be their 'Invoking Stone'. The Invoking stone is given as a gift to all priestesses when they become one. It is a cobalt, ovular stone that sits idly at the center of a headband/circlet they wear. Often hidden beneath the hood of their cloak unless they lift it. The stone is used as a sort of Siphon to hone their magic and sharpen it. The invoking stone itself is not capable of inflicting harm but instead is used to summon/craft protective and healing properties to be used. The stones are bonded directly to the priestess that wears it and can only be used if they are conscious. They cannot be removed by anyone but the priestess themselves or a High Lord.

    Additional Information

The contract forged between a High Priestess and her chosen sire is traditionally the verbal consenting set of laws that which initiate the start to conceiving and carrying a child to term in the name of the Cauldron. It typically consists of the High Priestesses conditions, her comfort level, anonymity following the child’s birth, and so on to ensure that she obtains no physical and mental upbringing after the child is given to the lord essentially (but not magically) ‘bound’ to her.

Should the High Priestess prefer it, the contract can be a physical set of papers requiring the sire’s own signature that he is agreeing to her terms as a means of evidence and liability in the matter she believes him or any sire may revoke his decision at any time which they are together until the child is born.

These ‘contracts’ are not at all like bargains, but they can be if the High Priestess and sire come to terms with whatever it is they are benefitting (as part of the conditions made at the start) aside from bringing a Cauldron-blessed child into the realm.

Because a High Priestess’s womb can often be a desirable rite of passage, as well as still be part of her oath to act on her fertile urges, obtaining multiple sires under one contract at the same time can be done. However, all high fae males participating must agree as well as be informed of whom and all are in lieu with said High Priestess.

A contract can end only if a High Priestess wishes it to. Once a sire agrees, he cannot abandon the contract, nor the babe until it is born. In the matter the sire does not take it, it will be either forced or put onto the next of kin to raise.

If a High Priestess/regular priestess is to fall pregnant because neither her nor her partner were taking the contraceptive tonic, it can be tried before another unbiased member of the Twelve or High Lord/Lady if a contract is then forced into submission as a ‘call’ from the Mother. If the priestess is considered as having ‘dallied’ outside of her mission and did not disclose ahead of time that she was not taking the tonic, she can threatened with removal of the priestesshood out of negligence for her training prior to ascension.

  • Fledglings

When you first join the Priestesshood, before being Ordained, a female comes to be known as a Fledgling - a Priestess in training. One who is learning to walk the path of the Priestesshood and still formally being educated in the skills it takes to become one. These girls, although they are not ordained, are given a powder-blue cloak to symbolize the start of their journey with the Mother and the Cauldron. This cloak serves as a symbol amongst Fae society. Marking them as pupils of the Priestesshood and offering a sort of protection to them from unwanted company.

Due to the mature and sexual nature of their teachings, the Priestesshood only allows females who have begun to bleed and are seen as fully mature to begin the journey as an official Fledgling. Though there are younger girls and orphans who serve in the temples in an unofficial capacity. These younger Fae are seen more as 'servants' or simple civilians who require sanctuary or wish to offer basic cleaning, singing and other household needs to the temples until their of age.

A Fledgling would likely either be assigned to a temple in a court or a specific Priestess for tutelage. However, in training they would likely have a variety of chores and duties to attend to, blending spiritual practice with everyday responsibilities.

    Fledgling Duties

    Ordination Ceremony

For a Fledgling to be Ordained officially into the Priestesshood she must go through the ceremony of Ordination. This begins with her being dressed in nothing but flowing robes and walks barefoot to the altar, accompanied by fellow initiates and mentors. Upon the altar she is then cleansed and bathed before all by a Priestess or High Priestess. Using sacred waters infused with herbs to symbolize the washing away of past doubts and preparing her for her new sacred mission. The initiate then kneels with her hands set over her heart before the altar and speaks the Oath of Devotion to the Mother and the Cauldron. Swearing to uphold the values she has been taught. It is then that the Priestess preforming the Ordination anoints her forehead with fragrant oils, whispering blessings for clarity and insight and then presents her with the circlet containing her Invoking stone and lays it on her head. After that the newly born Priestess lights a blue candle to symbolize the ignition of her inner light and the responsibilities she now carries. With the ceremony now concluded, it is followed up with a communal feast where many stories are shared, insights are offered and sometimes gifts of sisterhood from other Priestesses are given. There is music and dancing to celebrate her initiation to help welcome the Priestess into the Priestesshoood.

  • Priestesses

Throughout Prythian, the role of a Priestess often combines their spiritualistic duties and the likes of librarians, archivists and history-tellers. Bringing together their deeply rooted connections to their spiritual practice and their connections and respect for knowledge, tradition and fate. They serve as multifaceted figures throughout all of the courts and spend much of their time preserving important elements of culture as they do preforming ceremonies, rituals and serving as leaders of their community.

Their roles also serve as stewards and mentors for younger female Fledglings who have begun their journey into the Priestesshood. Teaching them everything from sacred rituals and ceremonies to how best to clean sacred tools and make ritual items. So as much as they spend their time out amongst their courts practicing their craft but they also often are honing the younger minds of fledglings still looking to become ordained Priestesses one day.

In order for a priestess to become a High Priestess, she must first and foremost be of High Fae standing and pure of blood. She must also be mentored by a High Priestess for a number of years that is subjective to the mentors discretion. This varies greatly depending on the readiness of the High Priesstess in training and the belief that she's ready to bear ready to bear children. Generally speaking though the youngest a High Priestess in training is considered for breeding is 100-120 years old. The final step to becoming a High Priestess is successfully carrying and bearing a child to a High Noble male. Leaving them to be reared by their sire after birth.

They do not serve one court but all courts of Prythian in the name of the Mother and the Cauldron.

  • High Priestesses

Though there are many 'Priestesses' within Prythian, there are only twelve 'High Priestesses' who govern over all other Priestesses throughout the courts and they are always of High Fae, pure blood. The largest population of which resides in the Dawn Court, Day Court, and Winter Court. They wear robes that are delicately and intricately twisted with multiple layers of pale blue-gray. They are far from 'chaste' in style however, often designed to hug the curves of their body as the High Priestesses are encouraged to fornicate and seduce, to put their fertility to use and bless Prythian with children. There is a piece of cloth that sit atop their hood and usually tucked under their circlet that can be pulled over their brow like a veil to offer a bit of 'privacy' when they pray, thank or beseech the Cauldron.

High Priestesses are known for the births of what are considered to be 'Cauldron blessed' children. A son or daughter of a High Priestess is looked upon with the title of Lord or Lady no matter their sire. Though typically High Priestesses are known to choose males of the highest rank and power available - including but not limited to High Lords themselves to bear children for. Once a Priestess has birthed her first child, she becomes eligible to potentially become a High Priestess in time but will requiring mentoring by another High Priestess before that can happen.

A High Priestess is one who might not only attend a special event but may actually also be granted special permission and privileges by a High Ruler to 'host', 'plan' and serve as leader to it as well. Events like Calanmai, Solstices and Equinox are often lead by a High Priestess and may be assisted by a small army of Priestesses and fledglings as well. Due to this and many other factors, a High Priestess is considered to be of noble standing and are often viewed to rank just below a High Ruler themselves.

Nearing her older years in which she is much less fertile, a High Priestess may seek 'mothership' and take on a group of priestesses as a mentor/teacher. To instruct them in the way she herself was once before instructed with the intentions of inevitably choosing a successor upon her demise or selected retirement.

They do not serve one court but all courts of Prythian in the name of the Mother and the Cauldron.
